In hectic life, depression is the most common chronic mood disorder and seems affecting more women than men. It triggers any age group but generally affects adulthood. Every individual shows the different symptoms of depression and its duration also differs from person to person.

When you are anxious, you feel like to have some drink to stress out your worries but it doesn’t. Alcohol seems like it calms our nerves but it has a negative impact on our brain. As it has impacts on the serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for regulating the mood and behaviour and affects other neurotransmitters as well. Therefore, when the alcohol wears off, it makes the situation worse.

The patient suffering from depression should stay away from alcohol because it may interact with some medications and worsen the condition.


As per the National Coffee Association, Majority of Americans drink coffee on a regular basis which increases the anxiety and nervousness. Because it decreases the production of serotonin and triggers depression.

Anxiety also affects the sleep pattern means sleep deprivation lead to mood swings and insomnia.

Refined Sugar

Sugar in every type of meal is not at all good for wellbeing. When you take sugar, the body releases insulin to absorb glucose. But when the sugar is in excess, it may trigger the worry, sadness and irritability. In general, Sugar is linked with the likelihood of increasing depression. Also, it is advised to avoid condiments like ketchup, pasta, white bread containing a high amount of sugar.

Also has the mineral copper which is the leading cause of anxious behaviour. For this reason, try to avoid tofu causing more anxiety and sad mood.

Wheat bran is full of fibres which boost up the digestion. The negative point about wheat bran has a high content of phytic acid. This chemical binds with the Zinc, the mineral for its positive mood behaviour and reduce its absorption. For the anxious patient, it is required to get proper Zinc loaded food to fight depression. Therefore, it is best to soak the wheat bran before cooking to get most of its nutrition.

Red Wine

Few Drinks of Red wine might feel you good but it makes your happy hours more pathetic as causing the sleep deprivation, dehydration and blood sugar fluctuation, therefore, best to avoid red wine when you are low mood.

Pumpkin Seeds

Raw Pumpkin seeds are healthier but the processed are not good at all as they are coated with preservative named potassium bromated which inhibit the iodine absorption by the thyroid. The thyroid is very essential for balancing positivity and mood behaviour. Without iodine, it does not work efficiently. Therefore, a doctor usually recommends to get a thyroid test done when an individual is suffering from depression.

Trans Fat

People should avoid trans fat as well as Saturated fats such as margarine, snacks items, baked goods etc which result in heart problems and also increase the risk of depression. Meditarrian diet mentioned the use of olive oil instead of trans fats lower down the risk of various health issues including depression.

Agave nectar is the unhealthy food as containing high level of fructose that increases the risk of metabolic syndrome results in triggering brain shrinkage and mood swings as well.

High Sodium Containing Food

Excess sodium-containing food not good for mental health as it affects the neurological system and results in depression. Also, too much salt leads to water retention and bloating and causing the irritability.

Hydrogenated oils

Cooking in certain Hydrogenated oil or Vegetable oils like sunflower oil, Soybean oil, canola oil contains the significant amount of trans fat which might be a potential cause of depression by further causing mood swings and inflammation.
