Bad breath in medical terms is known as halitosis –a foul odor emanating from the mouth. This is a very embarrassing and tough situation on those around you.

The question is what could be the reasons behind bad breath?

The origin of bad breath varies if dental problems such as dental cavities, poor oral hygiene, gum disease, white or yellow coating on the tongue.

Even there are hundreds of bad breath causing bacteria are on our mouth make a foul odor.

Another is having food with strong odor ingredients like onion or garlic also cause the bad breath. Like all the food we eat breakdown in the mouth. Gargling with mouthwash quickly fix it up to the odor but the odor will not go away from the mouth until food passed away through the body.

There are also some health conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, dry mouth, malnutrition make a foul odor, sore throat, lactose intolerance, ulcer, etc.

Also if the person has bad habits like smoking, too much alcohol intake, and many cups of coffee in a day, less water intake could make a bad odor.

1. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Do brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove debris and plaque. Don’t forget to clean the tongue. Change your toothbrush after every 2-3 months. Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash twice a day. The denture should be removed before going bed and clean it thoroughly before being placed the next day.

2. Get Your Body Hydrated

In a day it is better to have 2-3 liters of water. It helps to remove debris stuck between your teeth and cleaning harmful bacteria as well. Also if you don’t brush after every meal, floss your mouth just with water to moisten it. Even the daily having milk deodorizes the offensive bad odor.

3. Avoid Smoking And Chewing Tobacco Habits

As we know smoking is injurious to health. Cigarettes, pipes can foul your breath.

4. Cut Back On Alcohol

Beer, wine such hard liquor make your mouth dry and make your breath reek for up to 8 to 10 hrs.

They will conduct an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning to look out any periodontal disease or other problems that cause bad odor.

8. Rinse With Warm Salt Water

Salt water is a simple remedy for bad breath. Rinse the mouth as its acidic nature to prevent the build-up of infectious bacteria in the mouth. It mainly works by preventing alkalizing environment which encourages bad breath causing bacteria.

9. Digestive Enzymes

If you have bad breath because of digestive issues, digestive enzymes may help your digestion. Digestive enzymes come from different sources.
