What is Migraine?
Migraine is the neurological condition which is commonly characterized by intense headache or pulsing sensation on one side of the head. Women are most likely to get affected than men but affect all ages. When Migraine occurs without any warning symptoms (called Aura) is known as common Migraines and with aura known as classic Migraines. Generally, Migraines are accompanied by various symptoms such as Nausea, Vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, difficulty speaking, tingling, etc. The debilitating headaches last for a few hours to days and might interfere with the routine working activities.
There are various possible risk factors for Migraines like Family History, Irregularities in the brain’s blood vessel system, Abnormalities of brain chemicals, Unhealthy food, Caffeinated beverages, Preservatives and sweeteners, loud noises, strong smells, stress, medications, etc.
The migraine itself makes the worst situation for an individual but also deteriorates the health condition in other ways.
Here I have listed down various health issues that might occur with Migraines.
Stroke is the second most common cause of death. There is a link between Migraine and stroke means Migraine could be the risk factor for stroke and vice versa. Migraine means it affects the blood vessels which carry blood from the heart to the other body parts. Stroke more likely to develop in a person having a Migraine with aura as suddenly some parts of the brain get cut off from a blood supply. The condition might get worse if a person has bad habits like smoking, or suffering from cardiac diseases or even taking birth control pills.
If you get migraines, you are more likely to get seizures. Both conditions have the same pathophysiology means cells in the brain called neurons become insensitive. Therefore both conditions have similar symptoms like Visual Aura, sensitivity light and sound, nausea, vomiting. Scientists suggest both the conditions are linked with heredity still research is going on to get accurate correlation as migraine causing epilepsy or epileptic seizures bring about the migraines?
There are few drugs doctors prescribe like divalproex sodium and topiramate to get relief.
Insomnia means difficulty falling asleep. Insomnia is the common condition when an individual is suffering from chronic migraine pain means it doesn’t allow a person to sleep comfortably and disturb sleeping patterns. Lack of sleep results in triggering other conditions such as anxiety and depression. Other possible risk factors like alcohol and caffeine intake late night, Stress, anger, hormonal fluctuations, Medications etc making both the conditions unfavorable.
If you had sexual, emotional abuse in your childhood, you might get migraines problems earlier and lasts for long. There is no proven evidence but research suggests stress makes the changes in your brain structure, hormone or nervous system, certain genes. It is good to consult a trusted health care provider.
Migraine headaches are characterized by throbbing pain, sound sensitivity, nausea, vomiting, etc. And tinnitus is the condition of ringing or hissing in the ear. There is no clarity why this happens but it could be because neurons send abnormal signals during an attack. But the situation is really bad when an individual has both problems.
Hypoglycemia means low blood sugar levels. When you have a headache because of indirect causes like fasting, dehydration, release of stress hormones which makes the sugar level down and causing the condition more least.
The migraine caused by hypoglycemia may not be accompanied by other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, sound or light sensitivity, etc.
Irritable bowel Syndrome
An individual suffering from IBS is at high risk of developing a migraine and the symptoms are most likely to be bloating, belly pain, diarrhea, constipation, etc. The research found that the same genes could be the reason behind the condition.
Fibromyalgia is the same as a neurological disorder characterized by chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and pressure at specific tender points. Nerves overloads send the signals to the brain results in brain receptors become weaker and more sensitive to pain leads to migraine attacks. The treatment may help you keep away the fibromyalgia flares.
Anxiety and Depression
About 50% of the patients suffering from migraines also have depression. There are no clear links between but sleeping disorders make you more anxious and depressed. It also has something to do with your brain send signals from one neuron to another with the neurotransmitter serotonin.
If you have migraines, you are at more risk of developing heart diseases such as angina, heart attack, High blood pressure or vice-versa. But there are many things you can do to lower the risk like a healthy diet pattern, workout, enough sleep, Avoid alcohol and smoking, etc.
